The circus was closed. She had come too late. Hazel had been about to turn back when an old woman came toward her from the shadows. She meant to move out of the way for she could see that the woman was blind. But instead the woman stopped and turned her closed eyes toward Hazel and said, “Not time to leave yet. Come with me, girl. Something you should see.” Her voice was both ancient and childlike. The woman wore a strange headdress made of antlers from which hung a myriad of odd trinkets, beads, and other unexpected things. “Come, let me read your cards.”

This is the first painting from my BFA project.

Because I don’t know how to leave well enough alone I actually redid the high priestess from my hello kitty tarot/thoth deck yesterday.
The image 98% mine but credit to Joe Rosales’ Hello Kitty Tarot for the pillars.

Hey Tumblr!

So a few months back I finished the personal project to rule all personal projects.

I found a copy of the adorable and clever Hello Kitty Tarot deck by Joe Rosales that is now out of print. I thought it would be fun to color it. I was going to use watercolor, but the paperweight and ink wouldn’t allow that… So I scanned it and painted it digitally and 78 paintings and probably 300 hours later this is what I have!

I used the Thoth deck by Lady Frieda Harris and Aleister Crowley for color inspiration. I ended up editing the drawings for alot of the cards and totally redrawing a few of them To fit my interpretations of the cards. About 80% of the line work is original

It was a lot of work but I think it was worth it so that I could have my own version of such an adorable deck.

The concepts and drawings are (c)Joe Rosales and of course all the characters are (c)Sanrio
